Mission

We are seeking a talented computational biologist to lead a number of data-driven research programs aimed at identifying novel therapeutic hypothesis and targets. As a successful candidate, you will be part of the newly created Data Science R&D Department and will work in synergy with a cross-functional team of immunologists, discovery scientists and clinical researchers. You will be responsible for analysing and interpreting high-dimensional datasets, including but not limited to single cell RNA-seq, transcriptomics, epigenomics, genomics (GWAS, pheWAS, etc.) as well as proteomics datasets both from internal efforts and public sources with the objective of support our R&D projects. Your strong innovative drive and creativity will be essential to comprehensively integrate these multidisciplinary –omics data and findings from clinical trials to generate new biological insights and actionable working hypotheses. You will also be expected to provide pragmatic software engineering solutions to develop tools for interactive data analysis and visualization. You will be a pivotal team member that helps find and characterize novel targetable pathways by leveraging multimodal datasets from in vitro/in vivo models and patient samples.

The successful candidate enjoys working in a very dynamic, fast-paced, and cross-functional environment and is eager to help discover novel therapeutic targets and modalities in the field of autoimmune disease by using her/his computational skills to translate basic biology and clinical findings into actionable experimental hypotheses.

Tasks and responsabilities

  • Perform state-of-the-art analysis of large omics datasets from both internal efforts as well as public data. These include but are not limited to proteomics, genomics, transcriptomics datasets.
  • Lead and establish collaborations with academic partners and external companies to provide new insights to the Almirall R&D organization.
  • Enable interactive investigation and visualization of data analysis results by developing the appropriate data visualisation tools.
  • Work closely with the Director of R&D Data Science to establish project prioritization of computational biology work packages.
  • Spearhead the implementation of the R&D Data science strategy for the Computational Biology and Bioinformatics team.
  • Lead and develop the implementation of relevant data analysis pipelines in close collaboration with the Data Engineering team.

Eduaction and Experience

  • Scientific degree in computational biology or bioinformatics or related fields (preferably PhD) with at least 5 years of postdoctoral experience or equivalent.
  • In-depth experience of leading bioinformatic analyses for R&D projects in a pharmaceutical industry setting.
  • Experience leading the development of bioinformatic tools and/or algorithms.
  • Experience working with inflammatory skin disease, skin cancer and orphan skin disease research is a plus.

Specific Knowledge

  • Proficiency in R and/or Python
  • Previous knowledge of running and developing bioinformatics pipelines using Nextflow
  • Proficiency in the analysis, statistics and visualization of a range of datasets, including genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics data is essential. Experience working with single cell RNA-seq and different sequencing technologies is highly desirable.
  • Expertise with code repository software (e.g. git) and docker.
  • Hands-on experience in running bioinformatic analyses in the cloud and/or HPC
  • Track record of successfully completing projects from initial data analysis to generation of testable hypothesis leading to identification of new targets or pathways is a big plus.
